An East Lancashire town centre now has two more ‘pocket parks’ as part of moves to give it a ‘greener’ feel.
Work has now been completed by Hyndburn Council at the sites on Oak Street and opposite the Canine Club in Accrington.
This follows improvements at the corner of Bank Street and Warner Street earlier this year.
Both new locations have been revitalised with newly laid- surfacing and the installation of new benches creating high-quality, accessible areas for residents and visitors to relax.
Visitors to the Oak Street seating area are encouraged to look out for unique artistic detail integrated into the new paving.
The project will continue later this year with the large-scale transformation of Avenue Parade Gardens with new horticultural features, additional trees, and a bespoke sculpture designed by renowned artist John Everiss.
These improvements are part of a wider Accrington town centre project funded by the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund which aims to create a network of beautiful ‘pocket parks’.”
Hyndburn Council environment boss Cllr Stewart Eaves said: “It is fantastic to see our vision for a greener town centre taking shape.
“The completion of the parks on Oak Street and opposite the Canine Club adds two more beautifully refreshed spaces for the community to enjoy.”
Cath Holmes, chair of Hyndburn Green Spaces Forum, said: “It is absolutely brilliant to see these plans come to life.”
Hyndburn Council town centres boss Cllr Clare Pritchard said: “Despite these spaces being relatively small in size, they add character, charm, and some welcome green space to Accrington.”
Alongside pocket park developments three new murals have been commissioned.
Everyone is welcome to join the artists in a creative workshop on Friday August 15 from 11am to 3pm, in Accrington DOME shop on the town square.
