Lancashire publican urges local to ‘support their local’ as rural pub pressures grow

Owner of the historic Dalton Arms in Glasson Dock appeals for unity and community backing amid rising costs and concerns about the future of village pubs.

The owner of one of Lancashire’s best-known village pubs is calling on residents to rally behind their local, warning that without stronger community support, many rural pubs risk disappearing altogether.

The Dalton Arms, located at the heart of Glasson Dock near Lancaster, has served the community for well over a century. Built in the mid-19th century to serve dockworkers, ship crews and local families, it remains one of the village’s most recognisable landmarks. Over the decades it has hosted countless gatherings, celebrations and seasonal events, establishing itself as a vital social hub for the small coastal community.

Today, however, the pressures facing rural pubs are mounting. According to campaign group CAMRA, an average of one pub closes every day across the UK, highlighting the scale of a nationwide crisis affecting traditional locals.

In a statement, Dalton Arms owner Geoffrey Cann said the pub continues to welcome visitors “from across the region, country and in fact the world,” but emphasised that its true soul lies within village life.

“Each year we host community-minded, family-focused events that bring neighbours together, mark local traditions and keep Glasson Dock lively through every season,” he said. “These gatherings have survived on commitment, not deep pockets, and on a belief that every village deserves a place to come together.”

Cann acknowledged recent criticism from “a small number of voices” but stressed that most residents understand what could be lost if the village’s only pub were to falter.

“Rising costs mean no rural venue can rely on custom alone,” he added. “What keeps a village pub alive is shared goodwill, honest communication and a willingness to pull in the same direction.”

The Dalton Arms is now encouraging locals to attend upcoming events, offer constructive ideas and play an active part in ensuring the pub remains a welcoming gathering place for families, friends and future generations.

With the support of those it serves, Cann believes the Dalton Arms “can remain a steady corner of Glasson Dock for many years to come.”
