Fylde Council is calling for government support to protect local housing for its residents.
The authority say they want to protect housing availability by are asking the government to provide urgent support and clearer guidance on migrant accommodation placements.
Following a Notice of Motion passed at Tuesday’s Full Council meeting, the Council is demanding immediate action from Westminster, including additional funding to support the housing team’s vital work, clearer timelines for asylum accommodation placements, and a suspension of private housing procurement by a government contractor.
Councillor Chris Dixon, Lead Member for Social Wellbeing, said: “Our housing officers do an incredible job supporting everyone who needs help finding safe, secure accommodation – from local families facing homelessness to refugees through approved resettlement programmes.
‘’But they’re being asked to do more and more without the resources or proper consultation from central Government.
“We’re standing up for our community and demanding the Government provides the support and funding our borough desperately needs.”
The Council will write directly to the Secretary of State expressing serious concerns about the lack of consultation with local authorities and has referred the matter to the Local Government Association to strengthen national advocacy on this critical issue affecting communities across the country.
